Role Model

When you think about it a role model isn't someone you are, and therefore are like. It's some unattainable dream that you wish deep down you could emulate, yet never quite achieve - in most cases.
Kate Moss is such a fantastic example. Since when did being a model ever mean she was a role model? Ok so the ELLEgirl generation will scurry to Topshop to have 'the moss' jeans, the entire 16 year old population of Guildford will be sporting those darling little boots that everyone saw Moss in at Glastonbury, and... some of the bravest will attempt those short short hotpants, favoured by Kate and Sienna alike. But which girls will run out and take [allegedly] 5g of coke at an Ibiza party, alongside the likes of Jade Jagger and Pete Doherty? Erm not your average teen. And despite how much you love your 3/4 length tights and hotpants combo, you're not going to team them with this seasons hottest accessory Jude Law! Being a model and role model is clearly a different thing altogether.
When asked the other day who my role model was I cheerfully [if not so innocently] replied to my mothers aging friend the Edie Sedgwick was the person I would love to emulate. To say she gasped would be an understatement... 'You mean Andy Warhols physcotic muse??' well yes, yes I did. And no, to calm her fears it wasn't because she soooo Topshop this season, it's not because I love the sixties and therefore anything, and anyone who channels this era is cool to me. No it's because Edie got what she wanted. Running around London and New York as a 60's icon is what any city lover would adore. You are either a known or an unknown. And being the 7th of 8 children who wouldn't want to drag themselves out of nowhere and onto the NY party scene? She wanted scandal and knowtirity, and fifty years on girls still aspire for that level of mystery and fame. There is no argument against it, unless your father is a rolling stone you choose fame, and you choose a life of glamour. Being the muse to one of the best acclaimed artists is a path you live, Dr. Evil once said 'I'm going to place him in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death' to which the reply was 'aren't you going to watch them?' 'No, no, no. I'm going to leave them alone and not actually witness them dying. I'm just gonna assume it all went to plan'. No-one ever wants to witness the demise of someone so great, we're happy to let the great disspear into themselves. Edie was built up to an unattainable status of cool. The thing about being a role model is that it is hardly ever possible. Only the good die young. Can you see the great, Pete Doherty becoming grandpa Pete of 82. Me either.
